What is USA Revisited?

Welcome to the United States of America, as viewed and experienced by Americans abroad.

USA Revisited™, USArevisited.com is an ambitious little web magazine presenting articles, commentary, stories, experiences and humor about the United States written by Americans who live abroad or have spent significant time abroad.

USA Revisited was founded on the premise that the American discourse is enriched, informed and entertained through the voicing of the experiences and points of view of Americans who live or have lived overseas. This magazine is therefore intended for all Americans, whether living abroad, traveling abroad or living within the United States, as well as non-Americans interested in the American perspective.

Launched in April 2011, this magazine is just getting underway, so please excuse the current sparseness of certain sections as new writers come on board and we develop content (see the Contact page for Writers Guidelines).

About 5 million Americans live outside of the United States according the State Department, to which can be added military personnel and millions of travelers, students, teachers and retirees who spend a significant amount of time outside of the United States each year.

Americans abroad do not have a shared single perspective on the United States. Furthermore, there is no one reason for going or living abroad. Some of us may have dual nationality, most not, and we are unlikely to consider ourselves as immigrants or refugees or as the American diaspora. We are young and old, Republicans and Democrats and Independents, voters and non-voters, married and single, black and white and Hispanic, straight, gay and bisexual, theist, agnostic and atheist, financially secure or insecure, sports fans or not, flag-waving or not, interested in Hollywood couples or not, etc.

We can’t help but note here that the point of view of the American living abroad on major American issues of the day can be knee-jerkingly discounted within the 50 states (and even more so in Washington, D.C.). It’s as though our opinions on such issues were invalidated because spending so much time overseas has made us less American or, even worse, un-American.

Whether in Texas, New York or Utah, whether in a housing project or a middle-class suburb or a 5-star resort, whether in Israel, Hong Kong or Spain, all Americans are influenced by their location. Our time abroad has allowed us to directly experience life in two (or more) nations/cultures, which has in turn provided us with notable, diverse, valid views on events and experiences in the homeland.

USA Revisited is not the publication of a lobbying organization or an expatriate association or a political party. It is neither an open blog nor a forum for opinions. It is rather a web magazine presenting a diversity of subjects through which the editor and contributing writers “reflect on and revisit the United States.”

USA Revisited is a magazine that will survive (or not) on the belief that it matters, on the pleasure it gives its editor and contributors and on the patience of its publisher.

We do not endorse our outside advertisers, yet we are happy to present them on our pages in the knowledge that when you visit their external sites you help support our work on USA Revisited.

USA Revisited™, USArevisited.com is published by Words Travel International, Inc., an American company based in New Jersey.
